"How do we design better, more interesting systems for users? And at the same time, how do we use these systems to gain an insight into the mechanisms of human communication?"
My Research
I am interested in issues that come up at the intersection of computational modeling and social science, especially when it comes to the design of interactive systems. On one hand, tremendous work has been done by sociologists and philosophers, in looking into the problem of how humans communicate. On the other hand, natural science has had tremendous success in computational modeling of natural phenomena. Both these intersect in the fields of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), in which I work.

I am currently interested in looking into the problem of how technology-mediated artifacts of communication, such as emails, recordings of meetings, blog posts, wiki entries, tags etc can be used by knowledge workers in the enterprise. Can currently popular Web 2.0 techniques -- collaborative tagging, social networks, collaborative bookmarking, blogs -- can be used for sharing these artifacts within the enterprise? The design of such a (Web 2.0 based) system will involve two key issues: (a) How do people use communication channels (emails, IM, voice, face-to-face) in the accomplishment of their day-to-day tasks? And what role do the artifacts from these commuincation channels play in their work? (b) How do we build novel recommendation systems and computational models that exploit this knowledge?
Projects
Collaborative Tagging: Mathematical modeling of tagging activity of users.
Echoes: A tool to search, browse and tag stored audio conversations (meetings).
Blogs/Wikis for the enterprise: Enhancing blogs and wikis so that they can be used by teams in the enterprise.
