My Research
My research interests include wireless systems, mobility, presence, location and context aware applications as they apply to solving the communications needs of the enterprise worker.  I not only develop concept prototypes but build and refine them so that they can be deployed in real world environments (such as the MACCS trial at Johns Hopkins Hospital).  I am also interested in algorithms for digital image analysis.
Project
I am currently working on a mobility and context aware application called Mobile Access to Converged Communications Systems (MACCS).  This project addresses the problem of enterprise workers who need to be mobile while managing their communications needs.  A real world example of this was developed as a technical trial at the Children’s Center at Johns Hopkins Hospital during 2005.  I have also worked on projects that include calculating the location of wireless endpoints, a  SIP enabled wireless device in a J2EE comm app environment, and enabling secure authentication using a spoken PIN.  In the future, I expect to be working on new applications that run on the Avaya Speech Portal platform
Publications
In 2000, I coauthored the book “Practical Algorithms for Image Analysis”.  This book takes a “how to” approach on applying image analysis algorithms for solving practical problems.  Because this book has become a best seller in the image analysis domain, a second edition was published in 2008 that includes new chapters and material.

Recently I have authored several internal Avaya technical memoranda and patents dealing with mobility, presence and context aware applications.  My most current papers are as follows:

"MACCS: An Industrial Study of Hands-Free Wireless Communications for Mobile Healthcare Workers", M. Sammon, L. Brotman, E. Peebles, D. Seligmann.  HealthNet '07, San Juan, Puerto Rico, June 2007.

"The performance of a newly developed mobile hands-free context-aware communications system in a hospital environment", J. Atkins, M.
Sammon, L. Brotman. 151st Meeting of the Acoustical Society of America, Providence, RI, May 2006.

"MACCS: Enabling Communications for Mobile Workers within Healthcare Environments", M. Sammon, L. Brotman, E. Peebles, D. Seligmann. 8th International Conference on HCI with Mobile Devices and Services, Helsinki, Finland, Sept. 2006.

"Comparing Authentication Protocols for Securely Accessing Systems by Voice", L. O'Gorman, L. Brotman, M. Sammon. 2nd Secure Knowledge Management Conference, Brooklyn, NY, Sept. 2006.
