My research focus is on networking. Specifically, I am working in the areas of IP Telephony, quality of service (QoS), network monitoring and measurements, and overlay networks.

 

QoS is an important issue for real-time applications such as IP Telephony. My current research focus is on developing application layer approaches and efficient network measurement techniques to improve the QoS of IP Telephony.

I am currently working on the ORBIT (Overlays Providing Reliability for Better IP Telephony) project. The goal of ORBIT is to improve the performance and reliability of IP Telephony. The main approach involves rapidly detecting network performance degradation and automatically redirecting impacted IP Telephony calls around network impairments to preserve call quality. The technique works on heterogeneous networks without changes to the underlying network equipment.

 

Prior, I worked on the NetDat project, which involved developing a tool suite called ExpertNet^SM to assess network readiness for IP Telephony. ExpertNetSM automatically discovers the topology of a given network, and collects and integrates network device performance and voice quality metrics. Among many advanced features of ExpertNetSM is the ability to automatically locate the sources of performance degradation at the link level. This feature facilitates analysis by accurately pinpointing problem regions.

Over the last few years, I've authored several technical papers on the subjects of IP Telephony, QoS, network monitoring and measurements. These papers were featured at various conferences including the IEEE Conference on Communications (ICC), International Conference on Computer Communications and Networks (ICCCN), International Conference on Dependable Systems and Networks (DSN). I am also a co-author on several patent applications.
