Avaya Labs Research Software Technology Research
Avaya is often described as a software company, i.e., a company whose technology and ideas are realized in software. The Software Technology Research Department focuses on improving the state of the art in software technology, in improving the way Avaya does its software development, and in fostering notification and response technology.

Because we are part of an industrial research laboratory, we are able to test and improve our ideas in cooperation with industrial software development organizations. We work directly with Avaya's product development organizations to introduce new ideas and technology into their software development processes. We also develop software and prototype products that become part of Avaya's product line, such as the ROME notification and response system.

Part of the department is the Avaya Resource Center for Software Technology (the ARC), whose charter is to improve the state of the practice of software development in Avaya and know it. The ARC works closely with Avaya software development projects in areas such as schedule and cost estimation, software product-line engineering, appropriate measures to understand and predict quality and cost, agile development, process assessment, and architecture.

Our primary research concern is inventing tools, languages, components, and ways of organizing, talking about, and specifying software systems that simplify the job of understanding and building them. Equally important is understanding how to quantify the effects of applying new techniques. The true test of our research results is how well they confer a strategic advantage to Avaya when used in its software development. To achieve our goals we take promising new approaches to software development, such as software product-line engineering, refine them through their application in an Avaya software development environment, and measure their effectiveness with techniques such as goal-oriented software assessments.

Software Technology Research

David M. Weiss
My interests include software families, design for change, measurement, precise specification, and technology transfer. In the last few years my technical work has evolved into the invention of processes that incorporate ideas from all of these areas. The result has been a software production process based on family-oriented abstraction, specification, and translation, known as FAST. Such processes are now known as software product-line engineering processes.
PROJECTS
arroweXVantage Software Testing
The eXVantage tool suite has two execution modes: an interactive mode with user-friendly GUI and a batch mode with web-based reporting. The batch mode is more suitable for system integrators and the interactive mode for developers.
arrowSoftware Refactoring
Software refactoring is the process of improving the design of existing code.
arrowRight-Time Communication for the Enterprise
The Avaya ROME Research Project is investigating new and better ways to provide Right Time cOMmunication for the Enterprise. ROME focuses on event-driven communication to enhance the responsiveness of the enterprise across a spectrum of business needs such as emergency situations, supply chain outages, sales leads, and rapid response to customer problems.
arrowEvent-driven Communications System
The Event-driven Communication System (ECS) orchestrates communication in response to externally generated events to facilitate rapid and correct handling of events in the enterprise. Notification and response, conferencing, presence and other communication services may be combined by the ECS orchestration engine to address the needs of the event.
arrowXUI
The Avaya XUI Escalation System escalates repair tickets for customers of Avaya Services. Whenever a problem is reported by Avaya's expert diagnostic systems or by one of Avaya's customers, the repair tickets are delivered to the appropriate Avaya associates for action. Currently, more than 900 users around the world receive these escalations.
