Avaya Labs Research Data Analysis Research
Data Analysis Research investigates technology and methodology to turn data into information for Avaya's systems, applications, and internal operations.

In the Data Analysis Research Department we pursue world class, fundamental research in data analysis technology that is shaped by important, real-world applications within Avaya.  A general focus is that of data-driven research that has a real business impact.  Goals include incorporating the best data analysis technology into Avaya's systems, products, and internal use; and presenting our work to the research community through publishing in the professional literature and giving talks and papers at research conferences.
 
Technical interests in the department encompass: statistics, broadly defined including data analysis, theory, methods, computing and visualization; associated areas of computer networking; queueing theory and simulation; and related areas of computer science, e.g. machine learning, data bases, and expert systems.

James M. Landwehr
I find applications across a wide range of fields to be fascinating and exciting.  My own statistical research interests and publications have involved categorical data analysis, modeling, cluster analysis, graphics, and K-12 statistics education.  As technology advances, we can attack larger and more complicated problems but some underlying principles remain relevant: understand how the data really arose, and what the real problem is that needs to be solved.  My professional accomplishments have been recognized through being elected Fellow of the American Statistical Association (ASA) and of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).  I served as publications representative on the ASA Board of Directors and received ASA's Founders Award.  Prior to this position I was a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff and research supervisor in the Bell Labs Statistics and Data Mining Research Department.
